Phyllis Yes
A specialist in surprise, Dr. Phyllis Yes has made her reputation on gender-bending art and unusual exhibitions. Yes, a professor of art at Lewis and Clark College, has painted lace on a Porsche and placed wrenches at the dining table to challenge the inherent gender of objects. She's also been known to paint and show as a man -- the emminent David George. Her international credentials are solid, from shows in Brazil and Japan to Seattle and Portland. But around Lincoln City, she's best known for her "thoroughbread", a life-size horse covered in slices of white bread, which was stabled at the Freed in 1997. She's still addressing the "white bread" issue, creating small slices of bread on canvas that have personality and verve.
