Yoshiro Ikeda
Although he lives and works in Kansas, ceramicist Yoshi Ikeda has many admirers in the Pacific Northwest. A Japanese immigrant whose family settled in Portland when he was teenager, he earned his bachelor's degree in painting from Portland State University. He has shown his handbuilt teapots and vessels around the region, including the University of Oregon Museum of Art. He characterizes his work as "organic," a reference to his unusual glazes that remind his admirers of geologic formations. "They have reflected the organic aspects of nature, the ever changing weather and the art of dancing. These forms give an endless line of movement which continues to provoke curiosity," the artist says.
