Susan Johnson
Lifelong teacher Susan Johnson keeps a journal of memories and landscapes, rendered in oil bar on mat board. Her work incorporates gorgeous Oregon scenes, swirling lines that resemble calligraphy, and layers of light and shadow. She applies layer upon layer of color, and sometimes scratches through the combination. "Because I was trained during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism, the process of applying the paint is important to me and is not hidden," she says. Since 1970, Johnson's work has been shown in 21 juried shows, 28 one or two person shows and 27 invitational group shows around the Northwest. She lives in the Willamette Valley with her husband, professor and wordworker Curtis Johnson.
